Description

Imigran Nasal Spray is a popular treatment method for migraine relief. It is part of the branded treatment Imigran, which contains the active ingredient Sumatriptan succinate.

Imigran Nasal Spray belongs to a class of medications known as triptans. Unlike typical painkillers like Ibuprofen and Paracetamol, triptans don’t just mask the pain of a migraine. Instead, they work by reversing changes in the brain which are likely to be causing the migraine. This allows the spray to tackle the source of the migraine and alleviate the symptoms.

About Imigran Nasal Spray

Imigran Nasal Spray works by stimulating receptors in the brain called serotonin (or 5HT) receptors. These cause the blood vessels in the brain to contract and the pressure to ease.

It is believed that migraines are caused when blood vessels in the brain dilate, which creates pressure and therefore pain. By stimulating the serotonin receptors in the brain, the blood constrict again and the flow of blood through the brain eases, relieving the symptoms of the migraine.

Tablets or Nasal Spray?

Both Imigran tablets and Imigran Nasal Spray are effective treatment methods for migraine relief. The main difference between the two products can be found in the method of application.

For some people, taking tablets is unpleasant and difficult. In this instance, Imigran Nasal Spray represents a welcome alternative. Using the nasal spray is also thought to reduce the risk of ‘rebound headaches’, which can sometimes occur if you rely on migraine relief tablets for a long period of time.

How to use

Before you use any Sumatriptan product, consult the patient information leaflet.

For adults aged 18 and over:

Take a dose of 10-20mg into one nostril as soon as you notice the onset of symptoms. If your migraine symptoms are relieved but later resurface, the dose may be repeated after at least two hours. If you feel that your symptoms have not responded at all to the medication, do not take a second dose of the medication for the same migraine attack.

For children and young adults aged 12-17:

Younger users of Imigran Nasal Spray should take 10mg as soon as migraine symptoms occur. Again, patients who feel their symptoms do not respond to the treatment should not take a second dose for the same migraine. If symptoms lessen and later flare up, the spray can be used again at least two hours after the initial use.

This product should not be used by children younger than twelve.

Use

Like any other form of migraine relief medication, Imigran Nasal Spray should not be applied too often. The spray should be used as soon as possible once you notice that the migraine symptoms have occurred. It should not be used before symptoms have presented themselves as it is not a preventative treatment.

If you feel like the spray is having no effect on your symptoms, contact your GP rather than applying the spray again.

Side Effects

Like any medication, Imigran Nasal Spray does carry a small risk of side effects. Not everybody will experience these side effects, and some symptoms may be caused by the migraine itself.

For most people, there will be no discernible side effect to using the medication.

Precautions

Some of the more common side effects of Imigran Nasal Spray are:

  • Numbness
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Sensations of heaviness
  • Short term increase in blood pressure (transient)

Some people may also experience dry mouth and nausea. All of these side effects are usually mild and improve on their own.

For full information on the potential side effects of Imigran Nasal Spray, consult the patient information leaflet.
