Description

Yasmin (Ethinylestradiol 0.03mg / Drospirenone 3mg) is a type of medication to be taken by a woman who wants to prevent pregnancy and is under the age of 35. It prevents ovulation and changes the lining of the uterine wall, making it harder for the sperm to reach the egg. Yasmin is not suitable for all women and so it is important to understand both, the benefits and the risks of this medication before taking it.

Yasmin is known to be up to 99% effective in preventing pregnancy if taken in the correct way, as directed on the patient information leaflet supplied with the medication.

How to use

One tablet is to be taken daily, orally at the same time every day. This tablet can be taken with or without food or water. There are directions on the strip of tablets, labelled with the day of the week and an arrow guiding you. You must follow the direction of the arrows on the strip. You must take the tablets daily until you have finished the 21 day course.

Within a few days of taking the last pill from the strip you should have a withdrawal bleed; like a period. It is important to start the 21 day course again, after 7 days of finishing, whether you have finished the bleed or not. No extra contraception is needed during the seven pill-free days; provided you have taken the course as instructed.

If you miss a tablet, take a replacement tablet as soon as you remember; even if this means taking two tablets at the same time, and continue to take the course at the same time of day that you usually would. It is highly advised to take extra contraceptive precautions for the following days.

If you are sick or suffer from severe diarrhoea within two hours of taking the medication, your body may not have absorbed all of the hormones from the pill. It is advised to take a pill from a spare strip to compensate for this pill, and then carry on taking the course as normal; no extra contraception is needed. If you are suffering from persistent vomiting and severe diarrhoea, for more than 24 hours, additional precautions should be used; during and for 7 days after recovery.

It is advised to contact your doctor, family planning nurse or pharmacist for further advice, as they may recommend you to use emergency contraception.

Side Effects

When used for contraception, Yasmin may cause some side effects. These side effects include; depressive mood, headache, breast pain, vaginal yeast infection, nausea.

An increased risk of blood clots is present for all women who are taking hormonal contraceptives, and so it is vital to contact your contact your doctor immediately if you suffer from any unusual side effects.

Read the patient information leaflet for a full list of side effects.
