Description

Maxalt Melt (Rizatriptan) is a popular alternative to tablet migraine relief medications. Rizatriptan belongs to a class of medications known as triptans, which also includes the market-leading brand, Imigran. Triptans work to actively reverse the changes in the brain that occur when a migraine strikes and work as selective serotonin 5-HT receptor agonists.

In simple terms, Maxalt Melt and other triptan medications work by stimulating receptors in the brain that contract blood vessels and reverse the dilation of the vessels that occurs during migraines. Unlike painkilling medications such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, triptans do not simply mask the pain. However, Maxalt Melt is distinct from tablet forms of migraine treatment as they are known as oral lyophilisates – or melt-in-the-mouth medication.

About Maxalt Melt

Maxalt Melt is an easily accessible treatment for any adult suffering with migraines. One in five women and almost one in ten men suffer with migraines, and there are over 190,000 migraine attacks in the UK every day.

Maxalt Melt is suited to those who require fast and reliable relief from the pain and discomfort of migraines and particularly those who struggle to ingest tablets. Common symptoms associated with migraines include nausea and vomiting, which can be made worse by swallowing tablets. Oral lyophilisates like Maxalt Melt make migraine relief medication accessible to everybody.

The wafers dissolve quickly on the tongue and are swallowed with saliva, creating an easy and comfortable way to consume effective migraine relief medication.

How to use

Before consuming any Rizatriptan treatment product, consult the patient information leaflet enclosed in the medication packaging.

The maximum daily dose for Rizatriptan medication is two doses. For Maxalt Melt, this equates to a maximum dosage of 2x 10mg oral lyophilisates a day. Do not exceed this amount within a 24 hours period.

Place the Maxalt Melt on your tongue and wait for it to dissolve, after which it can be swallowed with the saliva.

This medication should only be taken by adults over the age of 18 who are suffering from migraine attacks.

Use

Take an initial dose of Maxalt Melt as soon as you feel your migraine symptoms beginning to set in. Do not take it before symptoms have arisen as it is not a preventative treatment.

If your symptoms improve after taking Maxalt Melt but later resurface, a second dose can be taken at least two hours after the first. If you feel that your initial dose made no difference to your migraine symptoms, do not take a second dose.

Maxalt Melt can take longer to work if it is taken immediately after consuming food.

Side Effects

Like many prescription medications, Maxalt Melt carries the risk of some mild to moderate side effects. These side effects will not appear in everyone, and they will most likely right themselves on their own without intervention.

Side effects of Maxalt Melt include dizziness, fatigue, flushing, heaviness and a short-term increase in blood pressure. Consuming alcohol whilst taking the medication will increase your risk of developing side effects.

For further information on the side effects of Rizatriptan medication, including Maxalt Melt, consult the patient information leaflet included with the product. If you are currently taking any other prescription medication, consult your GP before use.
